Subject: Jeff Bezos Has Some Thoughts About The News Business

June 22, 2017

Happy Thursday, all!

Well, I was determined not to lead today's newsletter with anything about
Uber or Amazon, and so I opted instead for some interesting sound bites on the newspaper industry from the owner of the Washington Post, who just happen to be the owner of Amazon.

Technically this doesn't count as Amazon news because Jeff Bezos bought WaPo from the Graham family with his own money in 2013. And
by many accounts, he's supercharged it with a beefed-up staff, updated tech, and just an all-around sense of fresh relevance.

Granted, unlike most newspaper publishers, Bezos actually has the money to do all that, but it's still worth paying attention to
what he has to say about the struggling news business. At an industry conference in Italy this week, Bezos offered his thoughts on why paywalls are good, pandering to advertisers is bad, and "complaining is not a strategy." Okay, that last one stings.

Check out more of Bezos's comments
here.

John Oliver and HBO are getting sued by the coal industry

On Sunday night's episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver targeted the coal industry. Now they are striking back. Oliver also targeted Bob Murray, the notoriously litigious CEO of Murray Energy, even though he knew he was likely to be sued for doing so, as the company sent the show a cease-and-desist order before the episode even aired. Full Story

Qatar Airways may buy a stake in American Airlines just to mess with them

Qatar Airways plans to dole out $808 million to buy a 10% stake in American Airlines, making the state-owned airline one of American's largest shareholders, Bloomberg reports. It's an interesting strategy for the Doha-based airline, which has been suspending flights to Middle Eastern neighbors as tensions in the region grow.
