Study Hall's Guide to Self-Care

Ariella Starkman wants to start a self-care revolution. "Self-care is radical, necessary, and a life-long journey," she notes. "It is a topic and practice that is under-discussed. But it is an essential tool to mindfully develop and manifest your best self." Here are her top four tips for better self-care:

Forgive Yourself

The great Maya Angelou once said, "Forgive yourself for not knowing what you didn't know before you learned it." Once we learn to move on from the past, we can be capable of focusing on the present. By forgiving ourselves for what we cannot change and learning to appreciate what we cannot control – gratitude ensues and feeling good proceeds.

Be Yourself

Why as a society are we made to believe it's okay to be everything else but ourselves? When we question the realities of social constructs and constraints, routes to self-love are revealed. As uncomfortable as that inquiry may be, feeling good comes from finding our authentic self – the one we've buried beneath other people's needs.

Moisturize!

The thing about moisturizing is that you know it's important. You know with all your heart that it's a big deal and that it should not be ignored. But that is where the catch comes in; suddenly the necessary thing is forgotten and you go days without oiling, creaming, or slathering anything on your limbs. You keep forgetting until the internal critic becomes the external testimony – your skin looks like the Grand Canyon.

Seek Solitude

We all struggle with finding time to prioritize ourselves. It's a result of being extraordinary multitaskers. Yet women are often tasked with the responsibility to care for everyone else before themselves. It's emotional labour and it's exhausting. Seeking solitude can be a vital step in discovering what you need to self-care. Whether that's taking a walk for 10 minutes without your phone, or steeping in the bath for an hour, carving out whatever time you can to sit with yourself and listen to your needs is care, and may help you discover which part of self-care is truly essential for you.
