STRIKE WON

THE STORY

Yesterday, the Pentagon said a US airstrike over the weekend killed about 150 militants in Somalia.

EXPLAIN?

The airstrike targeted an al-Shabab training camp. Al-Shabab: an Islamic terror group based in Somalia that's carried out deadly attacks across East Africa — including an attack that killed 147 people at a college in Kenya last year.

WHAT HAPPENED OVER THE WEEKEND?

The US has been keeping an eye on al-Shabab for a while now, and training Somali forces to fight against the group. US intelligence said a group of al-Shabab fighters was being trained for an "imminent" attack against American troops and their friends in East Africa. So the US took that as a cue to attack what they believed to be an al-Shabab graduation ceremony.

This strike on al-Shabab reportedly had the largest number of enemy casualties of any attack post-9/11. And at a time when everyone seems to be focused on the ISIS in the room, it's a reminder that the US has more than one terror group to worry about.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR CO-WORKER WHO'S ALREADY DOING BRACKET RESEARCH…

Hear about Erin Andrews? Yesterday, a jury awarded the sportscaster $55 million in a case against both a stalker and the management company at a Nashville Marriott hotel. Back in 2008, a stalker requested a hotel room next to Andrews, got said room, and then filmed her through the peephole of her room. And then posted a nude video of her online.  What a gem. The stalker was sentenced to 30 months in prison. Some people thought the video was just a PR stunt for Andrews. But she said 'not so,' and that the aftermath of the video was humiliating and led to harassment online and in public, as well as emotional damage. During her testimony, Andrews said ESPN wouldn't let her back on air until she talked about the incident on national TV. Yesterday, a jury decided she should get some cash money for the ordeal.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO JUST WENT THROUGH A BREAK-UP…

Consciously uncoupling can be hard. Yesterday, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of a woman who wanted custody of her adopted kids after she and her same-sex partner split. The two women never married but were in a relationship for 17 years and raised the kids together in sweet home Alabama. One of them gave birth to the kids, and the other adopted them. But the couple had to establish temporary residence in Georgia to make the adoption happen, because they were told that courts there would be more open to their case. Georgia gave the adoption the go-ahead. But after their break-up, the biological mom tried to take away her ex's adoption rights. The Alabama Supreme Court sided with the biological mom. Now, the US Supremes are stepping in, saying 'Bama has to respect Georgia's decision that allowed the adoption to happen. This comes after the Supremes' decision to legalize gay marriage last year — and shows that there are still a lot of legal challenges out there for same-sex couples.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU ACCIDENTALLY TAKE NYQUIL INSTEAD OF DAYQUIL…

This is not ideal. Yesterday, Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova announced that she failed a drug test at the Australian Open in January. She tested positive for meldonium, a heart medication that was added to the banned substances list this year. It's most commonly used in Eastern Europe, but it's not FDA-approved in the US. And there's evidence that it can be used by athletes to enhance performance. Sharapova says she's been taking the medication for 10 years for multiple health issues (think: magnesium deficiency, family history of diabetes). She also said she didn't realize the drug had been banned. Sharapova's now been suspended until the case is sorted out. Nike also suspended its relationship with her, and Tag Heuer decided not to renew her contract. But Sharapova's not ready to say 'game, set, match' to her career. Yesterday, she said if she was going to retire, she wouldn't announce it "in a downtown Los Angeles hotel with this fairly ugly carpet." Noted.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR FRIEND WHO ORDERS BOTTLED WATER AT RESTAURANTS…

Makes sense if you live in Flint, MI. Yesterday, seven families there filed a lawsuit against MI Gov. Rick Snyder and other officials. The reason? The huge H2-No that is the Flint water crisis. In 2014, the city left the Detroit water system and started taking water from a local river, allegedly to save money. Problem is, residents - many of them kids - started getting lead poisoning because of it. This suit alleges that officials failed to take action and downplayed the levels of water contamination. The families suing say their kids have suffered things like developmental disabilities. This is one in a string of lawsuits over the crisis, but it comes as criticism about Flint has gotten louder - especially after the Democratic debate held in the city over the weekend. Both candidates called for Snyder to step down
