1,349. Tefillin During Shiva

Daily halachos for Sunday, June 7, 2015

211:2 A mourner may not wear tefillin on the first day of shiva, whether this was the day of both the deceased's death and the burial or the day of the burial alone. If the deceased was buried at night, the mourner may not wear tefillin the next day, and he may wear them the second day after daybreak. The day one receives timely notification of a relative's death is the same as the day of death and burial in this matter. However, if the deceased passed away on yom tov, or if one received timely notification on yom tov, then the mourner may wear tefillin on the first day after yom tov.

211:3 The mourner covering his head is not customary in our countries. Nevertheless, there is room to partially cover the head by pulling the hat down over the eyes the entire week of shiva except for Shabbos, when it would be considered a public sign of mourning.
