Subject: Google's "Big" Problem

June 27, 2017

Happy Tuesday!

Well, Google set the kind of record today that no company wants to set. It was
hit with the largest fine ever by the European Union over what regulators there deemed anticompetitive behavior. In a nutshell, the EU says Google has been rigging search results to give its own shopping services an unfair advantage.

The fine has
rekindled a familiar debate over fair competition and the limits of Silicon Valley's global ambitions. Is the EU just into the idea of punishing American companies for their size and success? Or do they just have a fairer view of how big and successful any one company should be?

Responding to the fine, Google was quick to point out that
it's not the only big guy in town (hi, Amazon), but that's hardly a satisfying answer for folks who are really concerned about the outsize influence of these companies.

The big takeaway here is that today's fine was part of a pattern—and likely not the last to be doled out by our friends across the Atlantic. Expect this debate to continue.

In the meantime, read more about the fine
here, or just search it on Google.
