And a pick-me-up from Canada. October 17, 2016 Have a minute? Take this survey to tell us what you think of the Progress Report. Five Years Too Long We're talking about ongoing conflict in Syria, which since 2011 has taken nearly half a million lives and unleashed the biggest humanitarian crisis since the end of World War II. And now, as the world watches the Syrian government's ongoing offensive that is devastating the city of Aleppo, the U.S.'s patience with the Assad regime and their close friends in Russia is quickly running out. Reminder: Syria and Russia have been bombing Aleppo for weeks since the cease-fire deal between both sides of the Syrian conflict collapsed. Now there's also growing international concern that the Syrian and Russian governments are committing crimes against humanity on the ground in Syria. In search of anything but a military solution for the conflict, Secretary of State John Kerry—who's spent years working hard to find a diplomatic solution in Syria—indicated yesterday, alongside British Foreign Minister Borris Johnson, that the U.S. and Great Britain are considering enacting new economic sanctions against the Assad regime and the Russian government, in the hopes that this will push Assad and Putin to finally back off. WHAT'S TRENDING Graduation. Everybody's doing it. Well, at least more people than ever before. Today, the White House announced that high school graduation rates are at an all-time high of 83.2 percent. The graduation rate has risen 4 percent since new recording methods were put in place for the 2010-2011 school year and these most recent graduation rates show progress in every state and across all demographic groups. North Carolina. Over the weekend, the Orange County Republican headquarters in Hillsborough, North Carolina was firebombed and vandalized. No one was injured and the fire eventually burnt itself out. A swastika and the words "Nazi Republicans get out of town or else" was also spray painted on the side of a nearby building. North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory called the incident "an attack on our democracy." In a tweet, Donald Trump blamed "Animals representing Hillary Clinton and Dems in North Carolina" for the attack. Hillary Clinton, for her part, called the incident horrific and unacceptable and a group of Democrats have already raised $13,000 on gofundme.com to rebuild the office. Redistricting reform. Democrats are looking beyond November 8th and setting their sights on making the election map a little fairer, especially for House seats and at the state level. Former Attorney General Eric Holder will chair the new group called the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, with some help from his friend, soon-to-be Former President Barack Obama (pour one out). The dynamic duo will help the committee coordinate campaign strategy, fundraise, and put together legal challenges against gerrymandered state maps. To a future with fairer maps, Holder and Obama can get us there, we bet. Wake up calls. That's what Miami in particular should consider Hurricane Matthew. On its path of destruction the storm was a close call for southeastern Florida where the damage could have been much worse. Here are four reasons Miami-Dade needs to prepare now for the next big storm. 21 DAYS And Canada could sense that we needed a little cheering up so they sent this message: they already think we're great. Watch this video, and then take a break from making fun of Canada for a while.
