News Release Ontario Increases Funding to Ottawa Hospitals by Over $19 Million May 6, 2016 Expanded Support is Part of $51.8 Billion Investment in Health Care The government is increasing funding to Ottawa hospitals by over $19 million as it continues to invest more in health care across Ontario to give people faster access to the right care, now and in the future. Premier Kathleen Wynne announced the expanded support for 2016-17 at Hôpital Montfort in Ottawa today with Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. The government will provide the increased funding to four Ottawa hospitals: Over $5 million for the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario Over $1.7 million for Hôpital Montfort Over $1.8 million for the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group Over $11 million for The Ottawa Hospital. Ontario will increase funding to hospitals this year by more than $345 million provincewide. This is part of a total investment of $51.8 billion in health care -- a $1 billion increase over last year. The province also plans to invest $12 billion over 10 years in capital grants to hospitals to build modern infrastructure. About 35 major hospital projects are now underway across Ontario. Increased investment in health care is part of the government's plan to build a better Ontario through its Patients First: Action Plan for Health Care. This plan provides patients with faster access to the right care, better home and community care, the information they need to live healthy and a health care system that is sustainable for generations to come. QUICK FACTS The 2016 Budget includes $1.5 million to support the construction of the new 30-bed Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre in Ottawa. The number of physicians in the city of Ottawa rose from 2,233 to 2,944 between 2003 and 2014 — a 32% increase. Hospital funding in Ontario has risen from $11.3 billion in 2003-04 to $17.4 billion in 2016-17 — a 54% increase. Ontario is increasing its funding for home and community care by about five per cent each year for three years. This represents an increase of about $250 million for the current year. Ontario is nearly doubling the funding for community-based hospice and palliative care, to $155 million over three years. The province is also providing $50 million in new annual funding to help hospitals keep their facilities in good repair.
