THINGS GETTING AN UPDATE

PASSPORTS

THE STORY

Yesterday, the Supreme Court struck down a law that allowed US citizens born in Jerusalem to put "Israel" on their passports.

WHY IS THE US TALKING ABOUT JERUSALEM?

Jerusalem gets the US all hot and awkward. On the one hand, the US is one of Israel's BFF's. That's why Congress passed this law saying that US citizens born in Jerusalem should be able to list "Israel" as their birthplace. On the other hand, the US is heavily involved in peace talks between the Israelis and Palestinians — and both sides claim the holy city as their own territory. That's why the US technically doesn't recognize Jerusalem as being a part of Israel. And why the Obama Administration hasn't wanted to get involved by letting US citizens put the "Israel" label on passports.

Yesterday, the Supremes sided with the Obama Administration by saying that unless a US president recognizes a city as part of a larger country, it's not going on your passport. And it changes the rules for about 50,000 Americans born in Jerusalem.

APPLE

THE STORY

Yesterday, Apple kicked off its week-long developer's conference with some beats. Literally.

WHAT'S NEW?

Apple and Beats – which got hitched last year – finally had a baby. It's a music streaming service creatively called Apple Music that costs $10 a month. Cough, like Spotify, cough. It has a 24-hour radio station. Cough, like Pandora, cough. And it lets artists directly upload content. Cough, like SoundCloud, cough.

Apple hopes that by putting all these functions in one place, it'll be able to streamline (aka take over) your life and playlists. And say iWin to the music service competition.

THE *: Siri will also be taking over as your personal assistant-turned-stalker, by guessing who's calling when you don't have their contact info. So much for deleting your ex's number.

REPEAT AFTER ME...

WHAT TO SAY WHEN THERE'S AN AWKWARD SILENCE AT THE TEAM BRAINSTORM…

So what's our plan here? Yesterday, President Obama said the US doesn't have a "complete strategy" for training Iraqis to fight ISIS. Comforting. He said this is due to a lack of hustle on the part of the Iraqis. Obama said this at the G-7 summit, an annual meeting of international leaders. Which is basically like summer camp for political VIPs, except the fireside chats are about things like fighting terrorism.  Also on the G-7 to-do list? Tightening sanctions against Russia for its aggression in Ukraine and ending the use of all fossil fuels by the end of the century. And making a little time for a "Sound of Music" re-enactment

WHAT PEOPLE ARE WATCHING…

McKinney, TX. Over the weekend, a video came out of a cop pulling a gun on a group of black teens at a pool party there. On Friday, the cops were called about a "disturbance" at the party. After arriving at the scene, the police said the kids refused to leave when asked. The video shows one officer throwing a girl in a bathing suit to the ground, and pointing a gun at the others. Which many think was a liiittttle bit of an overreaction. The officer was suspended and there have been a lot of calls for him to get fired. This comes after incidents like thisthis, and this have put a big spotlight on excessive use of force by police. And speaking of, yesterday, community leaders in Cleveland tried something different. They've decided they're done waiting to find out if prosecutors will file charges against the police officers involved in the death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice. Last year, a Cleveland police officer shot and killed Rice when he mistook the boy's toy pellet gun for the real thing. Instead, yesterday they opted to bypass prosecutors and go directly to a judge to ask for murder charges against the officers.

WHAT TO SAY TO YOUR CO-WORKER WHO DISINFECTS HER DESK EVERY DAY…

Maybe don't go to South Korea. The country has been dealing with an outbreak of the MERS virus that's killed seven people and infected dozens. You catch MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) by coming in contact with an infected person's bodily fluids. Symptoms start like a normal cold, but can lead to pneumonia and kidney failure. MERS has mostly been a problem for Saudi Arabia. Now, South Korea's outbreak is the largest-ever outside the Mideast – more than 2,300 people have been quarantined and more than 1,800 schools are closed. Yesterday, South Korea basically said 'calm down, we got this,' but Hong Kong wasn't so sure. The city took its own precautions by adding new health checks for people coming into the city, and telling people to "avoid necessary travel" to South Korea. Noted.

WHAT TO SAY WHEN YOU'RE IN THE MOOD FOR DINNER AND A MOVIE…

Done and done.

THING TO KNOW

The Yips: neurological condition that can cause wrist spasms for athletes — especially golfers. But it's also become the excuse your golfer friends use when they choke up on the 18th hole. Ask your dad about it…or Tiger Woods.
